I set up an appointment with them and made arrangements to place my dogs at day care... then contractor calls to tell me he’s on his way and then shortly after TEXTS me that he can’t do the job because my dogs will scratch it. I don’t understand why he doesn’t have the professional courtesy to call someone and explain and just send a text. We had rescheduled our weekend to accommodate the company to do the work at our home. This is unprofessional and how can you say my dogs will scratch it? Since then I spoke to a couple of concrete stain contractors that are coming to give us quotes and all have said pets are not a problem. He knew we had dogs since he beginning so he shouldn’t have gone along and made an appointment with me and made me take my dogs to day care if he didn’t think he would be able to do it.

On the last day of deck construction, as the deck crew was packing up to leave, Mike and his crew showed up and started prepping. Aside from being incredibly flexible and extremely professional, Mike and his crew were amazingly efficient. I had expected the job to take two to three days but they were able to sand and stain my 400 sq ft deck and arbor in one day. The results are simply amazing…they transformed a plain deck into a thing of beauty.
Black Pearl Custom Painting was fantastic! Mike was very open and honest about his pricing. When we called to have our house painted Mike said he could have the house done in the next couple days if we were willing to do so. 4 days after we spoke on the phone the house was finished. From the original meeting with Mike we were not going to have him paint the baseboards and doors, 2 days later when he had already started the project we changed are minds and told him to add the doors, and baseboards. He still charged us the same price from the very first quote. We called more than once place to get a price check and Black Pearl was almost half the price! Plus the other place said it would take 2 weeks for them to start on the house vs the 4 days it took to have them already complete the project! The paint looked great, the service was great, the whole experience with Black Pearl Painting was great!
One of my main concerns going in was how they would work around my recessed hot tub and how careful they would be not to get excess stain on the house, concrete, hot tub, etc. I now realize I had no reason for concern. They protected my house and hot tub perfectly, just like Mike assured me they would.
Called for an estimate and explained what we needed done and he called back and disrespected and cancelled on us and saying how his business is doing soooo great only to call back the next day saying we left and voicemail and he was returning the call and would like to give an estimate and after us thinking on maybe he was sorry he remembered and laughed and said he though we were another customer.... personally I would never give this company/guy another chance or suggest him to anyone.
Unfortunately, there were several delays caused by the deck company, and I had to push back the staining timeline several times. Mike was wonderful throughout the whole process, reassuring me that he would do everything he could to work around my delays. Near the end of the deck construction, I had a personal deadline that was nearing (family visiting from out of town) but Mike still assured me he and his team would be able to complete the job.
UPDATE: he replied that he will pray for me? Okay I am saved but thanks. They actually opened our door to find someone who will do what they say. And others reassured that if you do a good job the stain cannot be “damaged by dogs” and that if it does they will come and fix it... for free!! When they said they were on your way I took dogs to day care AND lost out on money for cancelling for tomorrow and Saturday. We were leaving to Austin but canceled to make sure we were here for project. The text he wrote said that he didn’t know how our condition of patio area but it is brand new and he had seen it before. There was only a paint stain which he saw and still agreed to come. Waste of time. It’s just unprofessional to TEXT a client cancelling saying it’s because of dogs and thanks when you agreed to something and said you were on your way. Being professional means making a polite call/leaving voicemail. If you want someone who can stain floor correctly resistant to dog scratches do research because this company says they don’t have “solutions” that they feel comfortable applying that are resistant to dogs and I found three other places that say that is not likely to happen. And now that I see other reviews for black pearl job looks pretty bad.
After reading several stellar online reviews for Black Pearl Custom Painting, I reached out to Mike for a staining estimate for my new deck. The deck was still under construction but far enough along that Mike was able to give me a quote, which was reasonable and within our budget. Anticipating the deck would be completed shortly, we agreed on a timeframe for staining.
This review is long overdue. Michael A. Doherty came out to provide us an estimate for deck staining early Nov 15. We agreed on price but had to wait a few weeks for better weather. A few weeks passed and we hadn't heard from him so we contacted him. It was approaching Thanksgiving now so he suggested waiting for better weather (again) and since the holidays were upon us he recommended doing in Apr/May. His last words to us were "Happy holidays to you as well. I will be in touch." Well Apr/May came and went and we never heard from him again. It was a big project - I'm assuming he didn't want to actually do the work it was going to take so instead, decided to ignore us, lose profit and gain negative feedback. He may do good work as some suggest, but we personally will never be able to attest to that.
