Absolutely my favorite barbecue in town! Their sauce is addictive, but it's all right, because you can buy a bottle of it to tide you over at home.
Perhaps we caught Augie's on a bad night. I would not discourage folks from giving the place a try, but I don't know if I'll be returning when they're are so many others great smokehouses in the region.
We got moist brisket and mac and cheese. The brisket was so oily and fat that me and my accompanying group couldn't eat it all. Additionally, the mac and cheese was sadly watery and truly lacking flavor. Finally, the house sauce seemed to be flavored with artificial smoke, which was also a real let down.
I must always get the same thing and it's the brisket with the sausage sandwich. Potato salad and is one of my only go to sides. Like most people in Texas I'm super picky about my potato salad, but this place has it down. I've never had anything I didn't like. Parking sucks in the hours on a weekend slash Monday are really odd to keep up with. That they close at 3 in the afternoon... I don't understand why somebody would do that
Sometimes it's challenging to objectively evaluate smokehouses because barbeque is an experience involving so many of the senses. Augie's feels several notches above "hole in the wall," but it still feels quite thrown together. It was hard to see the sides through the weird, windowed trough, but what I could see was sad: dried up pulled pork and very watery mac n cheese. What you can see (or can't) is an important part of the experience. Augie's didn't seem to put their best effort into this aspect of their experience.
Everytime I come in I'm never disappointed. Place is tidy, service is impeccable, food is to die for.... Bravo!
The sides are good. The bbq sauces have good flavor. The meat is ok at best. Most of the meat is over cooked and is lacking any flavor. We had the pork ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and sausage.
